There's a lot of focus on gift-giving this time of year. Retailers inundate us with ads for all the latest "must haves" that will ensure we have the most joyous holiday ever.

But what about the gift we are to each other?

In this issue, you will find lots of examples of how we are "present" for our patients, families, community and coworkers. There's Mike Farrell, MD, who has spent nearly 50 years teaching residents and fellows and making sure that kids get high quality care, whether they live in the inner city, the suburbs, or outlying rural areas.

Then there's Kacey Appel, PhD, who started at Cincinnati Children's as a clinical research coordinator 15 years ago and recently earned her PhD in psychiatric epidemiology. She pays tribute to her family members and mentors who helped her achieve her goal and inspired her along the way.

Or read about Madison Rylee, RN, who received so much from our staff when she was a patient here and now gives back to patients as a nurse in the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute.

It's been a tough year with long stretches of high census and staffing struggles. Even so, we continue to find innovative ways to relieve the stress and support each other while fulfilling our vision and mission with grace and gratitude.

May the stories in these pages help you reflect on your own contributions to helping patients and families, and may that reflection bring you joy.
