Population Health Research and Innovation
Focusing on discovery and advancement of research and innovation
The Population Health Research and Innovation program is revolutionizing population health and advancing health equity through cutting-edge research, transformative innovation and collaborative engagement. The strategic goals for Population Health Research and Innovation are listed below.
Key Highlights
Research and Innovation made significant progress in research, care delivery and workforce development through:
- The launch and progression of three learning networks - PINQ, PHIN, and OAK
- Accessible population health and health equity research due to data democratization
- HealthVine Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) contributions incorporated into daily work (e.g. language accessibility, communication preferences, learning network interventions)
- Well-child roadmap developed and adopted by several community practices
Lives represented through our national network - the Pediatric Population Health Improvement Network (PHIN)
Lives represented in the Ohio statewide population health learning network - Outcomes Accelerations for Kids (OAK)
Lives represented in our local learning network - the Pediatric Improvement Network for Quality (PINQ)
Strategic Plan Delivery Achievements
- Launched Population Health and Health Equity (PHHE) Scholars Program
- Supported the launch and growth of Outcomes Accelerations for Kids (OAK), a state learning network focused on improving outcomes for children covered by Ohio Medicaid insurance. This was accomplished through partnership with the Ohio Department of Medicaid, Ohio-based managed care entities and our partner children's hospitals in Ohio.
- Expanded HealthVine Patient Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to better reflect Medicaid population (e.g. non-English speakers, fathers)
- Created a publications dashboard, uniting Population Health and Health Equity research across divisions and departments
- Advanced well-child roadmap progress through Spanish and neurodivergent versions, as well as enhanced resources for developmental and behavioral pediatrics
"The PHHE Scholars Program has been a phenomenal opportunity to advance my skills through didactic and experiential training, dedicated research and scholarship, and mentorship from local and national experts. It has been invaluable for my training and career development."
Samantha Simpson, MD, first PHHE scholar, Cincinnati Children's
Looking Forward
In 2025, Population Health Research and Innovation program is focusing on:
- Expanding local partnerships for future formal internships and co-ops
- Developing and evaluating of OAK regional measures
- Revitalizing PHIN and PINQ
- Expanding families participating in the PFAC
- Increasing learning network alignment to streamline efforts across all population health programs
